By Maj. Gen. Gordon Ellis
38th Infantry Division Commanding General
Soldiers with the 38th Infantry Division completed all required training at Fort Hood, Texas, and are preparing to deploy into the Middle East where they will provide mission command to U.S. ground forces on the Arabian Peninsula as the Task Force Spartan Division Headquarters.
Preparation conducted at Fort Hood included cultural training, operational environment updates and theater-specific equipment issue. Each soldier also completed an extensive administrative and medical screening process.
The final training event was a multi-day exercise in which the 38th ID headquarters conducted simulated operations and responded to notional events that occur in the theater. This exercise included personnel from the U.S. First Army, U.S. Army Central Command and the 34th Infantry Division, the unit currently in theater conducting Task Force Spartan operations. Following the completion of the exercise, First Army validated all required training and certified that the 38ID is prepared for deployment.
Lt. Gen. Terry Ferrell, the commanding general of U.S. Army Central Command, visited during the training exercise and had lunch with the soldiers of the 38th ID. He provided a review of current operations in theater and his thoughts on the final preparation for the Task Force Spartan mission which is a prime example of the Army's Total Force Policy, an ongoing effort to fully utilize the reserve components, both the Army Reserve and the National Guard, as operational forces.
The 38th Infantry Division, one of eight National Guard divisions and one of 18 U.S. Army divisions, provides fully manned, equipped, trained and expertly led units prepared to deploy and conduct unified land operations for combatant commanders.
