MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) – Sailors assigned to Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) held a ceremonial dinner celebrating the 77th anniversary of the Battle of Midway, June 7.
Navy recruiters and senior leadership from NRC gathered for this event to commemorate the battle fought on the high seas of the Pacific more than half a century ago. The Battle of Midway was fought June 4-7, 1942, over and in the waters near the island of Midway in the central Pacific Ocean. The United States took the offensive in World War II after this victory over the Japanese Navy. After Midway, the tide of the Pacific war turned in favor of the United States and its allies.
“Blood, sweat and the sacrifice of many brought us here to where we are today, and we cannot forget what they have done for us,” said Commander, NRC, Rear Adm. Brendan R. McLane. “Our past will always shape our future, so it is important to learn from it. Tonight, we will look back on the Battle of Midway, and I hope we can take in the magnitude of that battle, its importance, and the importance of our mission today.”
During the ceremony, the attendees reflected on the recruiting mission and the future of the Navy.
“At the heart of every military victory in naval history is the toughness, initiative and courage of American Sailors,” said Rear Adm. Andrew Mueller, deputy commander, NRC. “Through your voice as recruiters sharing this inspirational legacy with today’s youth, I am confident we will not only succeed in building the Navy the Nation needs, we will ensure its legacy will endure with a warfighters ethos.”
The current goal for Navy recruiting is to bring in 39,000 new Sailors in support of the national policy to build a 355-ship Navy.
Navy Recruiting Command consists of a command headquarters, three Navy Recruiting Regions, 18 Navy Recruiting Districts and eight Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 1,330 recruiting stations across the world. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
