SAN DIEGO – A Sailor assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) died during a motor vehicle crash near Interstate 8 in San Diego, June 2.
Aviation Electrician’s Mate First Class Monterro J. Friend, 34, of Memphis, Tenn., died from injuries sustained in the singular vehicle accident.
The U.S. Navy is working with local police on the investigation.
Capt. Rich LeBron, Bonhomme Richard’s commanding officer said, “the loss of AE1 Friend has impacted us all. We all mourn for our shipmate. Our primary concern now is to provide support for the family, friends and shipmates as they grieve the loss of AE1 Friend.”
Bonhomme Richard is in its homeport of San Diego.
