    38th Infantry Division

Laurie Rush, the cultural resources program manager at Fort Drum, New York briefed soldiers of the 38th Infantry Division about cultural awareness and partnerships to prepare soldiers for their upcoming deployment to Kuwait with Task Force Spartan Shield while training at Fort Hood in early June.

While overseas the 38th soldiers will help expand partnership capacity and build lasting relationships.

Division soldiers benefited from Rush’s years of expertise and knowledge in anthropology helping service members understand the importance of antiquity preservation and cross cultural communication, but Rush, who holds a doctorate in anthropology, shares more than culture with 38th Infantry Division soldiers.

“It’s really rewarding to be able to give back. Also, to be recognized and welcomed back into the fold," said Rush.

Rush chose to go to undergraduate college at Indiana University in Bloomington partly because “Midwestern kids are friendlier than East Coast kids." The 38th Infantry Division is headquartered in Indianapolis and many of its soldiers hail from the Hoosier State.

"It's nice to have that connection. You have that Indiana connection. It gives that relationship linking our state and where we are going, since she's been there," said 1st Lt. Ryan Cinowski of Monticello, Indiana.

Understanding how antiquities and structures help define a cultural identity explains the focus of Rush's presentation to all in attendance.

"It would be just like someone throwing away a bottle I kept when I visited the beach as a little kid," said Spc. Damian Weaver from Nappanee, Indiana.

The discussion with Rush covered several other topics while leaders heading for Kuwait listened intently to the importance of the heritage of the ancient world, self awareness, and how to bridge strong partnerships over the next year in the region.

“There are so many positive things about this part of the world. Try to stay focused on those and try not to worry as much about some of the things we find harder to work with when we are in that part of the world,” said Rush.
