KU NROTC Volunteers Following Storms

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Eight members of the University of Kansas Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) volunteered following tornadoes that struck near the university last week.

The volunteers, all recent graduates of the university and recently commissioned Ensigns in the U.S. Navy, are awaiting transfers to their first duty stations.

“The University of Kansas Naval NROTC Unit was committed to supporting tornado relief efforts in Lawrence because of our dedication to the local community,” said Ensign Charlie Richmond, who organized the unit’s volunteer effort. “We have enjoyed close support in our relationship with our neighbors, and we were ready and willing to help them in their time of need.”

The group cleared debris from the properties of local residents, including an 83 year old Air Force veteran and an 88 year old widow. They cleared downed tree limbs, large sections of roofing debris, scrap metal, glass, and other material from the area, and sorted it for pickup by the county.
The volunteers were Ensigns Scott Gilmore, Kyle Garton, Cameron Wolf, Jacob Ellenberger, Kurt Wenske, Patrick Nagle, Charles Richmond, and Katie Meeds.

The NROTC program is overseen by Rear Adm. Jamie Sands and his Naval Service Training Command staff at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois. NROTC was established to develop midshipmen mentally, morally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, loyalty and core values in order to commission college graduates as Navy and Marine Corps officers who possess a basic professional background, are motivated toward careers in uniformed services and have a potential for future development in mind and character so as to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.

NSTC oversees 98 percent of initial officer and enlisted accessions training for the Navy, as well as the Navy's Citizenship Development program. NSTC also includes Recruit Training Command (RTC), the Navy's only boot camp also at Naval Station Great Lakes, the Navy ROTC program at more than 160 colleges and universities, Officer Training Command (OTC) Newport, Rhode Island, and Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) and Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NDCC) citizenship development programs at more than 600 high schools worldwide.
