Arturo Calzadillas, Jr. the director of emergency services at Fort Hunter Liggett, received the Distinguished Member of the Transportation Corps Regiment Award during a ceremony at Fort Lee, Virginia on May 7, 2019.
According to the Transportation Corps (TC) website, “The Distinguished Member of the Regiment Program was established to maintain the legacy of the Transportation Corps and to promote cohesiveness and esprit de corps by recognizing individuals who have served the Corps in an outstanding manner.”

“It’s definitely and honor, and very humbling,” said Calzadillas. What this distinction means to him is playing a more active role in helping to maintain and advance the professionalism of the transportation corps.
He is recognized for spending eight years in the transportation career field, and serving as commander for two transportation companies; the 737th Transportation Company from 2005 to 2008, and the 217th Transportation Company from 2000 to 2003. He deployed with the 90th Regional Readiness Command to Kuwait and Iraq in 2003 and 2006.
“My greatest takeaway while serving in the corps is that transportation assets are forecast several days in advance, and failure to plan and execute missions can have long term effects on theater and corps operations” said Calzadillas.

According to Calzadillas, some little known facts are that the Army Reserve has all the rail operations in the Army inventory and currently more boats than the Navy.

His last military assignment with the Transportation Corps was as the U.S. Army Transportation Corps Chief of Total Force Integration at the Office of the Chief of Reserve Affairs. He was responsible for making sure that the Army Reserve and National Guard work together to support the Total Army concept.

During his military career, he also served as an assistant professor of military science at the North Georgia College & State University, a combat engineer and an armor officer. He retired in 2016 with the rank of lieutenant colonel with a 32 years of Active and Reserve Component years. In his civilian capacity, Calzadillas served as a city police officer for 10 years, and State police officer for five years in Washington.

“Fort Hunter Liggett is proud to have Arturo as part of the professional corps of Army civilians and his law enforcement experience is definitely a value to the community,” said Garrison Commander Col. Kerry Norman.
