NAPLES, Italy – Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Africa/Commander, U.S. Sixth Fleet, announced the upcoming celebration of the "Week of the Young Child," April 7.
The Week of the Young Child, April 19-25, supports a key NAVEUR-NAVAF operational objective to "provide exceptional stewardship to our workforce and families" by honoring young children and all those who make a difference in children's lives.
WOYC is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the
Education of Young Children and is the world's largest early childhood education association. The purpose is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families, and recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.
Established in 1971, WOYC was developed as a way to recognize the importance of the early childhood years (birth through age 8) in the development process.
"It's a time to recognize the importance of early learning and early literacy," said Derry Koralek, editor in chief of Teaching Young Children, the magazine of the NEAYC. "It's a chance to celebrate the teachers and policies that bring early childhood education to young children."
The theme for the Week of the Young Child 2009 is "Bring Communities Together
for Children--Children Bring Communities Together."
