Colorado Springs, Colorado. – Culinary Specialists from 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) LaRochelle Dining Facility showcased their cooking skills at an annual fundraiser run by the American Culinary Federation, Pikes Peak Chapter at St. Paul’s Church April 27, 2019.
Every year towards the end of April the Pikes Peak Chapter of the ACF holds the Culinary Passport event to benefit a food related charity. Up to eight chefs from around the Colorado Springs area are invited to attend. The event includes ethnically diverse food and beverage samplings from around the world.
This year, Soldiers from 10th Group showed up to participate.
"It was a great opportunity to come out and test our skills against some of the best chefs in the local community," said a sergeant from 10th Group.
For the past year, members of LaRochelle have been reaching out to local restaurants and chefs to train with them in order to expand their own culinary knowledge.
"We call it the 'Bridging the Gap' program," said a senior culinary non-commissioned officer with 10th Group. It is a program that, he says, has been very successful.
It was this program, along with their other work within the communities, that got them invited to this year's Culinary Passport event.
"I love it," said a senior NCO in 10th Group. "One thing that we have tried to do over my tenure here is to figure out a way to get our cooks into the community,"
At the end of the night, when the food was eaten and the votes came in, it was 10th Group that walked away victorious, winning the People's Choice Award for their dish.
"It felt great to come out and win our first time coming against some of the best chefs in the area," said a sergeant from 10th Group.
Taking home the win, 10th Groups cooks proved that they are ready and resilient in support of their community and families, and that for the Original Special Forces Group, "The Best" will always be supported by the best.
