Approximately 600 soldiers with the 38th Infantry Division began their premobilization training Sunday, May 5, at Camp Atterbury near Edinburgh, Indiana.

The training prepares soldiers with the necessary knowledge to proficiently support their deployment mission for Task Force Spartan.

The premobilization training includes a wide range of tasks such as physical fitness, individual and crew-served weapons qualifications and resiliency training that will ensure the soldiers are proficient, agile, adaptable and lethal.

Indiana National Guard Spc. Blake K. Ross, a radar technician with the division, is taking advantage of his unit's training.

“So far, anti-terrorism has had a strong impact on my training,” said Ross of the briefing topics. “It has showed me an unbiased side of this deployment, no matter where I end up.”

While soldiers are learning in the classroom they are also setting goals and deciding what they want to accomplish during their time overseas.

“I’m looking forward to different experiences with different cultures that we don’t experience in the U.S.” said Ross, who is excited to see how other cultures thrive in such a different environment.

Sgt. Nicholas W. Turner, a fire support specialist with the 38th, volunteered for the deployment to pursue opportunities to improve himself.

“Basically, I’m looking forward to self-development,” said Turner, who wants to focus on his mental and physical health. “It is harder normally with all the distractions at home.”

As a part of their overseas operation the 38th citizen-soldiers will be in command and control of more than 9,000 U.S. service members who are there to foster partnerships, increase security and self-reliance throughout the Middle East.
