NORFOLK – Demobilized Sailors along with their spouses attended the Returning Warrior Workshop (RWW) in Norfolk April 26 – 28.

RWW is hosted at different locations throughout the year as a means to welcome returning warriors and provide them with resources to integrate back into civilian life.

“We want them to feel appreciated,” said Wyman Winbush, retired U. S. Navy Captain and featured speaker at RWW events for more than 10 years. “They’re part of that one percent that actually serves to protect our nation and just acknowledging that really helps them feel like they’re valued.”

The workshop featured veteran speakers and roundtable discussions about the challenges of returning home after being away on deployment. Mary Spear, financial advisor and coach, shared her over 24 years of expertise in personal money management as a way to thank the young men and women for their service.

“I have been connected with the military my entire adult life and I see the sacrifices these young men and women make,” said Spear. “Our lives revolve around money, whether we like it or not. We need to have a financial plan, be aware of what’s on our credit report. There are so many elements we need to think about in regards to money. If I can give them the tools and the motivation to make good decisions, I know they’ll be prepared to put their best foot forward after coming back home.”

Rear Adm. Nancy S. Lacore, vice commander, U. S. 6th Fleet, also took part in RWW incognito to understand what the warriors have gone through and to speak from her experiences.

“I’m also here as a Warrior, having just returned from a mobilization about eight months ago,” said Lacore. “I believe it’s the most important part of the whole deployment cycle. It’s important that we’re taking care of our Sailors before, during and after. This is where we get to help them after. It gives them time to reflect and ensures they receive resources they need.”

Lacore emphasized that warriors are not just going for themselves, but also as a way to continue serving the Sailors they lead.

“You need to come. If you think you don’t need it, I challenge you to come anyway because there are probably things you haven’t thought about,” said Lacore. “And if it’s not about you, make it about your family. If you don’t want to make it about family, make it about your Sailors. Come to RWW, hear what we have to offer, hear about the resources, and bring it back home as a leadership tool for your Sailors.”
