BAGHDAD -- A car bomber, unable to penetrate Coalition and Iraqi Forces defenses, failed to reach his intended target but managed to wound several people when his vehicle detonated outside the International Zone at 1:20 p.m. Oct. 4.
The attack is under investigation to determine if the target was a Ministry of Interior official or a delegate from the Transitional National Assembly.
Initial reports indicate that four Iraqi Police, three Iraqi Army Soldiers and three civilians were wounded during the explosion. Two Task Force Baghdad Soldiers were also slightly wounded.
Baghdad emergency workers and firefighters quickly responded to the cars that were set ablaze during the explosion.
Soldiers from 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment and the 1st Battalion, 5th Iraqi Army Brigade are providing security for the area surrounding the checkpoint while clean-up is ongoing.
