On April 14, 2019, Sgt. 1st Class Thomas (Rusty) R. Robinett died in a boating accident in the Gulf of Mexico near, Destin, Florida. The incident is currently under investigation.

The Commander of 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Col. Patrick T. Colloton, released the following statement expressing his condolences with Service Members and Families of 7th SFG(A),

"It is with great regret that I announce the tragic loss of Sgt. First Class Rusty Robinett, a 2nd Battalion Soldier who died in a boating accident on 14 April. Rusty was a phenomenal father, husband, son, Soldier, and brother to many in the 7th Group. He was one of our best. Our focus and priority of effort is to provide the best possible care to his wife and their three children. It was an honor having him serve within the ranks of 7th SFG(A). He was a part of our family, and will not be forgotten. I want to thank all of members of the 7th Group, U.S. Coast Guard, Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, and Florida Fish and Wildlife for their efforts to find and recover Rusty. Thanks also to all who have provided support and care for the family. I ask that you continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers."

He is survived by his wife Jessica and their three children. Our focus now is to provide the best possible care and support for his family, friends and loved ones. I ask that you to keep them, and the rest of the Robinett Family, in your thoughts and prayers.
