Virginia Beach, Virginia -- Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Norfolk, conducted Deployment Readiness Training (DRT), March 31, for potentially deploying Navy Reservists and their families.

DRT, a requirement for imminent and voluntary deployers, consists of proactive education on all phases of deployment and the challenges associated with them. It provides the Sailor and the family with access to resources and support programs available to them before, during and after a deployment.

"In our region, we typically host four DRT’s a year," said Arlene Poe, Yellow Ribbon Program Specialist at Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Reserve Component Command Norfolk (RMARCC). "We want our Sailors and their families to know that people care and there is support out there for them."

Attendees were introduced to local representatives from military support agencies, programs and charities including Military One Source, Department of Veterans Affairs, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC), Tricare, United Concordia Dental, Psychological Health Outreach Program (PHOP), The Department of Labor, The Virginia Employment Commission, The Reserve Officer’s Association (ROA) and RMARCC Family Support and Yellow Ribbon.

Command Master Chief Tim McIntire has been a speaker at over a dozen DRT’s since he assumed his position over a year ago.

"It provides us the opportunity to give them information early on in the process," Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center (ECRC) Command Master Chief Tim McIntire said. "For a reservist about to come back onto active duty, someone who may not be familiar with their benefits, this gives them and their family the opportunity to know what’s out there and to utilize it."

More than 150 people attended the NOSC Norfolk’s DRT, though only a small percentage of them are scheduled to deploy in the near future. Because DRT is conducted on a Reserve drill weekend it is also offered to non-deploying drilling Reservists and their families, eliminating the need repeat the training ahead of schedule.
