LRC Italy supports humanitarian relief efforts to Ukrainian rehabilitation center

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – The Logistic Readiness Center-Italy’s Humanitarian Assistance Program loaded a shipment of humanitarian aid supplies headed for Ukraine, at Camp Darby, Italy ,Feb. 13-14.

The shipment, which included washers, dryers, hospital beds, pillows, blankets and more, was destined for the Zhytomyr Women and Infant Rehabilitation Center at Zhytomyr, Ukraine. The U.S. Embassy in Kiev requested the supplies to help maintain the rehabilitation center.

“We loaded five 40-foot containers with 2,059 items worth more than $140,000,” said Janine Wick, HAP-Excess Property program manager, Livorno, Italy. “The Zhytomyr rehabilitation center is well-known in Ukraine for its high standards of health care, international cooperation, and assisting women and children with post-war stress.”

HAP is a DoD activity set up to consolidate non-lethal excess DoD property. One of its goals is to provide donations to foreign countries in support of Department of State-sponsored humanitarian projects and contingency disaster relief missions.

LRC Italy’s HAP has a long history of providing humanitarian supplies, having supported projects in Georgia, Lithuania, Croatia, Albania, Senegal, Moldova, Armenia, Estonia, North Macedonia, and Kosovo, among others.

LRC Italy is one of seven LRCs under the 405th Army Field Support Brigade and the only organization in Europe providing oversight of the HAP-EP mission.

“HAP is a small part of our mission but an important one,” said Col. Grant L. Morris, commander, 405th AFSB. “With HAP we can provide disaster relief and promote regional stability where needed. It is a great program, and we have a great team here executing its mission.”
