CAMP SCHWAB, Okinawa Japan-- Marines and Henoko residents gathered to bowl together at the Camp Schwab Bowling Center Feb. 26, 2019.
30 Henoko residents including the Henoko Mayor, Munekatsu Kayo and 15 Marines including Brig. Gen. Paul J. Rock Jr., the commanding general of Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler, attended the event which was organized by the Friendship Committee.
Established in 1960 by Henoko village and Camp Schwab leadership, the Friendship Committee was founded to maintain positive relationships between Marines and the local communities on Okinawa.
“Brigadier General Rock's attendance shows the importance of the local community and the enduring relationship between Camp Schwab and the community,” said Charles DeCesari, the Camp Schwab Director. “We try and meet 3 to 4 times a year. We hold softball games and go bowling, and we invite everyone out to Schwab-fest. They also invite us out in town to have a meal, or enjoy dances and festivals. It’s a time to relax and enjoy our communities.”
The Marines and local residents laughed, ate and bowled together for three hours. Food was grilled at the bowling center and provided by the Beach Head Club on Camp Schwab.
Rock and Kayo played two games of bowling each, mingling with the guests and enjoying the friendly competition.
“These events forge a strong friendship between Camp Schwab and the village of Henoko,” said Kayo. “I had a lot of fun bowling and hit the highest score I ever have in a game. We always enjoy these events and we want to keep them going.”
Friendship Committee Meetings are an important part of building and nurturing the partnership between the residents of Okinawa and Marines island-wide.
