POZNAN, Poland — The 1171st Medical Company Area Support with the Michigan National Guard officially assumed responsibility of the first National Guard Role 2 Medical Facility in Poland during a transfer of authority ceremony in Powidz, Poland, Feb. 6.

Capt. Andrea Kennedy, commander of the 1171st MCAS assumed authority of the Role 2 Medical Facility from Capt. Jose Birriel, commander of 181st MCAS with the Puerto Rico National Guard.

“All the Soldiers of the 1171st [MCAS] are excited to perform their job,” said Kennedy. “It’s awesome for National Guard Soldiers to go on active duty and do the job they have been trained to do by the Army.”

Among the distinguished guests were Col. Timothy Bosetti, the commander of the 30th Medical Brigade, and Command Sgt. Maj. Mathew Baller, the senior enlisted advisor for the 30th MB.

Lt. Col. Jay McFarland, commander of the 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion, expressed his appreciation to the outgoing Soldiers of the 181st MCAS in his address during the ceremony.

“No unit appreciates what the 181st [MCAS] has taken on and accomplished in Powidz more than the 421st MMB,” said McFarland. “Your assumption of the mission here has given the 421st MMB and the 30th MB greater flexibility in supporting all the U.S. Army Europe requirements for medical support. For that, you have my sincerest gratitude.”

The unit’s hard work and dedication transformed the medical facility, in Powidz, into the first National Guard Role 2 Medical Facility in Poland.

McFarland also gave a special charge to the incoming Soldiers of the 1171st MCAS.

“There is still ample room for improvement, and I know that [the] 1171st will continue to build upon the foundation the 181st has laid here,” said McFarland. “Many missions will extend outside of Powidz, and that is a testament to the trust and confidence I have in your technical and tactical proficiency, your professionalism, and your ability to represent this command across U.S. Army Europe.”

The arrival of the 1171st MCAS marks the initial rotation of Soldiers of the medical facility providing health care to Soldiers deployed to Poland in support of Atlantic Resolve.

“The 1171st is representing Michigan and the 30th MB,” said Kennedy. “We are proud of the support we will provide and look forward to doing this mission.”
