DETROIT (NNS) – Over his 13 years, Machinist’s Mate 1st Class Christopher Holder, a Bailey, North Carolina native, has been stationed all over the country, from Hawaii to Virginia. Holder said he succeeds at every job, no matter what his duty is at a command, because he has a positive attitude.

Holder is assigned to Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Michigan where he has the opportunity to positively impact the nation’s youth as a recruiter.
“I hope to help make this command better while I am here and to do the same for the cities and zip codes where I recruit,” said Holder. “Recruiting is important to me because it gives me a sense of pride knowing that I am changing someone’s life for the better.”

Holder checked aboard NRD Michigan four months ago, and has contracted a Future Sailor each month. Holder said recruiting is equally challenging as it is rewarding.

“Recruiting gives me the opportunity to have a hand in shaping the fleet,” says Holder. “My actions directly affect fleet manning. The fleet suffers if I don’t do my job, which ultimately effects my next job when I go back to the fleet.”

Holder says recruiting has helped him to understand how important it is to get Future Sailors to join the Navy and keep the fleet manned. One of the duties of a recruiter is to educate the nation about the Navy and why it is important. While participating in community outreach events, Holder has taught many people about what experiences, training and career opportunities are possible as a Sailor.

“The best part of recruiting is visiting high schools and informing young adults about future options,” said Holder. “When I tell them about what the Navy has to offer, it feels amazing to see the look on their faces when they understand how I can help them. It’s also very rewarding when I see people that join knowing they are going to be a part of something bigger than themselves.”

The Navy offers many opportunities to grow and succeed both personally and professionally. Holder said these opportunities have been helpful to both him and his family.

“The Navy has helped me grow as a person,” says Holder. “Specifically as a leader and problem solver. The Navy will give you a challenge and you have to find the right way to overcome it. Having to do something different each day is what helps people grow both personally and professionally. Trust me when I say ‘it’s never the same day twice’ with this job.”

NRC consists of a command headquarters, three Navy Recruiting Regions, 20 Navy Recruiting Districts and six Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 1,300 recruiting stations across the country. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
