NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 30, 2019) – William Mackie, Engineering and Construction Division geologist, is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District Employee of the Month for December 2018.

Mackie is being recognized for his contributions and support on three of the top five command priority projects in the district.  At the Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project in Chattanooga, Tenn., Mackie notably developed a scope of work for additional exploratory drilling needed to confirm drilled shaft depth for approach walls.  The work allowed a request for proposal to be issued and contract modifications were negotiated in a timely manner.

The Tennessee native also oversees the verification coring program for the Kentucky Lock Addition Project, and at the downstream cofferdam at Chickamauga Lock where the test results enable the verification of stability of the dewatered cofferdam.

“He is an excellent role model and I appreciate his willingness to help wherever he can, with minimal oversight from senior geologists.  He assisted the ongoing delivery of these critical missions, despite being a relatively new employee,” said Lt. Col. Cullen Jones, Nashville District commander.  “Mackie is a tremendous asset to the Nashville District and Army Corps of Engineers.”

Mackie began working for the Corps of Engineers in 2016 through the Pathways Program and credits his work ethics and much of his success to the geology team in the Engineering and Construction Division.

According to Josh Bomar, Geology Section chief, Mackie cares about his projects, people, continuously demonstrates selfless service by taking initiative, and goes above and beyond what is necessary to see that others understand the mission and purpose.

“He’s a great asset to our team and without even needing to ask, he will just step in and do a job or contribute to get things done… all the while staying fully present and not missing a beat with his own responsibilities,” Bomar said.

Most recognizable, Bomar added that Mackie covered the night shift dam safety inspection over the December holidays when assigned staff unexpectedly deployed to support FEMA disaster relief.

“He works hard, is a great person and well deserving of this award,” said Bomar.

Mackie grew up in Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and attended Mt. Juliet High School.  After a few years in the U. S. Navy, he returned to Tennessee and graduated from Middle Tennessee State University.

His father, David Mackie worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers of engineers as a mechanic and superintendent at Center Hill Dam.

“I’ve been around these lakes and dams all my life and can’t help but love them,” said Mackie.

Mackie said he loves every Corps lake in Tennessee but his favorite one is Center Hill Lake and his favorite Corps project is Chickamauga Lock.

Mackie said he is surprised by his selection for employee of the month, but is grateful for the recognition and credits the team atmosphere in the section.

He said his wife Stephanie and sons Liam, 4, and Nash, 2, all keep him inspired.

In his off-time, Mackie said he enjoys skydiving, rock climbing, anything outdoors, spending free time with his family, and taking his sons on adventures.

Jones said Mackie’s professionalism, dedication to mission execution, and superior performance is a credit to the Nashville District, the region, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
