Annie Mathis is an occupational safety and health specialist. She started with the command as a helper-trainee in 2014 as a dismantler. Mathis has been assigned to the Everett Detachment since April.

    Briefly describe your job
My job is to partner with the command workforce giving them knowledge and equipping them with the tools they need to work safely without any injuries and with 100 percent compliance with the rules and regulations we follow.
My job fits in a very important place for the team. We are here to ensure all of our employees go home to their families every night in the same condition they came to work in that morning.

What do you like about your job?
I love my job. I love everything about it! It fills me with pride and fulfillment knowing the relationships I build with the workforce are stepping stones to a better understanding and compliance with the safety rules and regulations we are all expected to follow.
I was honored to have the opportunity to teach new employees about safety during the New Employee Orientation. It was a chance to give them knowledge and show them the passion I have for safety and a safe working environment. When people see passion they better understand how important it is—not just to them—but to everyone else around them. You watch my back and I will watch yours!

How does what you are doing benefit the command and beyond?
The command benefits when there is a full workforce ready to work every day. We could not achieve that without a good working relationship between the workforce and the safety personnel. The Navy benefits when we have a full workforce working safely, getting jobs done and the ships back to the fleet.

What has been a memorable moment, or an encouragement to you about your job at PSNS & IMF?
When I first came to Everett I had the opportunity to organize and present a safety stand down to our workforce here. Since then we have had fewer injuries and fewer deficiencies. It is amazing to watch people change the way they work when they are given the knowledge and tools they may not have previously had, or didn’t quite understand.
