As a crane electrician, it is Ashley Jones’ job to ensure that cranes are maintained and readily available to support the needs of the Navy.
From routine maintenance to emergent repairs, Jones stands ready to respond to the demands of the lifting and handling equipment.
Her daily duties include electrical, electronic, motor and generator work.
From manufacturing circuits to refurbishing key components, Jones is versatile and proficient in the demands of the trade.

What gives you pride about the job you do?
“As a crane electrician, I directly affect the ability of the yard to function. When ships and boats pull into our dry docks, their maintenance depends on the cranes. Portal cranes pull tons of components from their hulls. Bridge cranes support shaft, propeller and various other major work. Our package hoists are utilized by shop-qualified operators to progress work on valves, motors and countless other mission-essential systems. To me, and I may be biased, the Lifting and Handling Department is the heart of the yard and ensures that each shop and code can get their work done.”

How do you see your job as being important beyond the command?
“The thing I like most about my job is the enormous responsibility. I know this would deter most people, but I work well under pressure and knowing that the lives of our Sailors and their families and the security of the United States are directly affected by my performance motivates me to work harder every day.”

What would you tell someone new to inspire or encourage?
“I believe that everyone here has enormous potential. Whatever motivated you to get in the gates is irrelevant—you are here. You got in. The big question is: Now what? It’s a big question, and for those who are brave enough to ask it there are many who are willing to help guide them. I believe there is ample opportunity and diversity in our work to maximize each and everyone’s potential.”

What has been a memorable moment, or an encouragement to you about your job at PSNS?
“My most memorable moment so far in my career at PSNS has been the support I’ve gained from the leaders. I truly believe that my management supports me to become better. Particularly Joslyn Moore, a general foreman at Crane Maintenance. We first interacted when I was assigned to her crew in 2015; she was my supervisor. Her career has grown exponentially, and I think that’s mostly due to her servant leadership style. Watching her has been an inspiration; she always makes the time for me when I need advice or guidance.
“All in all, the culture of the Code 700 team has propelled me to strive to new heights. Their continuous training and development has established an atmosphere where it is safe to fail—and only then can one truly succeed.”
