Story by Petty Officer 2nd Class Donald White

    USS Nimitz (CVN 68)

Capt. Kevin P. Lenox, commanding officer of USS Nimitz (CVN 68) served as the guest speaker for the Wreaths Across America event at the Washington Veterans Home, Retsil, Dec 15.
Every December Wreaths Across America performs their mission of remembering, honoring and teaching by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as more than 1,400 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad.
"Military personnel, myself included, are blessed to live in a community that has always welcomed uniformed personnel and our families. I thank you not only for your hospitality, but for making military appreciation a part of this community's culture," Lenox said, during his remarks.
This year volunteers from Veterans of Foreign War Post 2669 and various organizations across Kitsap County, Wash. laid more than 1,400 wreaths on headstones at the Washington Veterans Home cemetery.
“Today we gave back to those who gave all for our freedom we enjoy today. You have civilian and military volunteers working together to give these modern day heroes the treatment they deserve during the holiday season. It’s a beautiful thing to behold,” said Michael Shoemaker, one of the event coordinators.
The annual wreath-laying is typically held the second or third Saturday in December. For more information, or to volunteer for an event next year, visit https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/
