FORT CARSON, Colo. — About 10,000 people flocked to Fort Carson’s Iron Horse Park Oct. 13, 2018, to soak in the warmer weather and experience a taste of Germany.

The Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s (DFMWR) Oktoberfest celebration combined German music, dance and refreshments with a plethora of activities for children of all ages on a welcomed day that boasted temperatures in the mid-60s.

“I don’t think we could have asked for a better fall day. Even when the sun went down, it was quite pleasant; we we’re very grateful that Sunday’s snow held off,” said Jenn Revell, sponsorship and advertising sales manager, DFMWR.

The six-hour festival had about 200 participants run in the 5K Volksmarch, 20 teams combined to compete in the Oktoberfest Olympics and sand volleyball tournament, and the many who battled it out in the stein holding, pumpkin seed spitting and costume contests. Attendees reveled in the German polka music and dance performances along with the many free activities scattered throughout the festival. The little ones took on the challenge of a miniature obstacle course and bounced around and climbed inside and on various inflatables. There was also a car show across the street at the William “Bill” Reed Special Events Center.

“The events team was trying to bring something different (to the community) … we want to make sure we have events for our single Soldiers and for all ages to enjoy,” Revell said.

And that they did, according to Sgt. Joseph Robles, 59th Quartermaster Company, 68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 4th Sustainment Brigade, 4th Infantry Division.

“I wanted to experience Oktoberfest and see what it had to offer, and I’m very glad I did. It is a great opportunity for Families and Soldiers to get together,” said Robles, who outlasted the competition in the stein hoisting event and blew past his rivals in the adult seed spitting challenge.

Revell said community members can anticipate the return of Oktoberfest next year.

“It’s been a very successful event … we’ve had a constant flow of people since 2 o’clock,” she said.
