More than 700 military children will have full stockings and presents during the holidays this year thanks to the volunteers and donors at the Washington National Guard Joint Service Support’s Holiday Magic event on December 18 and 19 at the Pierce County Readiness Center, Camp Murray.
“Our ultimate goal is we want to get them in a better place so they are not in need in the future, but we also want to support our families,” explained Deborah Discolo, a family assistance coordinator with JSS.
Holiday Magic looks to relieve some of the financial burden of military families struggling to provide gifts during the season. Service members and veterans were able to submit requests to participate in the Holiday Magic event and given the opportunity to collect gifts based on family size and children’s ages.
The JSS puts on this annual event in conjunction with support from the National Guard Association of Washington, Operation Homefront, and donors like Walmart and Heartbeat for Warriors. The event had over 250 military member participants and more than $6000 worth of gifts and food items.
“After they meet with the providers, the service members can go through and pick out high end toys, then they can get bags full of stocking stuffers, and a holiday meal that is provided by donations from the American Legion out in Bremerton,” said Discolo.
This year’s event was the largest since it began more than 10 years ago.
