ST. LOUIS (NNS) – Navy Recruiting District (NRD) St. Louis recruiters attended an off-site christening ceremony at the St. Louis Science Center for the newest littoral combat ship, USS St. Louis (LCS 19), Dec. 15.

The science center hosted the event with a live-stream video of the ship’s christening, which was physically held in Marinette, Wisconsin. More than 100 people at the St. Louis Science Center including local high school students, Sea Cadets and recruiters viewed the launch of the ship in real-time on a large projector screen set alongside rows of Navy displays and informational flyers. Other activities at the center included the Navy’s virtual reality asset the “Burke,” which allows people to experience Navy life through virtual reality.

“I want to thank Navy Recruiting Command for engaging and being a part of this event,” said retired Rear Adm. Lee J. Metcalf, christening committee chairman. “Other parts of the Navy are focused on manning our ships, but they’re helping the local communities by showcasing what the Navy has to offer.”

Sailors from across NRD St. Louis’s area of operation traveled hundreds of miles to attend this historic event. The goal of a recruiting presence is for the Sailors to interact with the local community, build positive relationships and promote the Navy on a large scale.

“There aren’t a lot of people in this area that know what the Navy is all about, and it’s our job as recruiters to change that,” said Gas Turbine Systems Technician 1st Class Maribel Moran, leading petty officer of Navy Recruiting Station Collinsville. “Events like these really help broadcast the Navy’s presence and in turn help us recruit the next generation of Sailors.”

The ceremony concluded with a splash as the live-stream broadcasted the ship being transferred from the pier to water for the first time. Following the ceremony, NRD St. Louis recruiters remained on site to talk with people, show people 360-degree Navy footage using virtual reality goggles and promote various activities at the Burke display.

NRC consists of a command headquarters, two Navy Recruiting Regions, 20 Navy Recruiting Districts and six Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 1,300 recruiting stations with a total force of more than 6,100 personnel across the globe. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
