Poznan, Poland – “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.”

This famous quote was spoken by the Hall of Fame football coach Vince Lombardi which, consequently, speaks volumes about Pvt. Daisy Martinez, an automated logistical specialist with the 526th Quartermaster Composite Supply Company out of Fort Riley, Kansas, who works as an issue section clerk in the Supply Support Activity in Powidz, Poland.

The SSA in Powidz is the largest logistical warehouse in Europe, sending out items to more than 150 deployed units in Europe supporting Atlantic Resolve, a U.S. led effort that demonstrates U.S. commitment to the collective security of NATO and dedication to ensuring peace and stability across Europe.

According to her leadership, Martinez is a leader, in the absence of leadership. She consistently displays a sense of duty by doing what is asked of her, completing missions in a timely manner, going above and beyond her normal taskings, and ensuring her peers are doing what is supposed to be done.

“It seems like she’s been doing it her entire life,” said Staff Sgt. Jekingsley Sainthilaire, noncommissioned officer in charge of the SSA.

Her job, the automated logistical specialist, is primarily responsible for supervising and performing management and warehouse functions in order to maintain equipment records and parts in a fast-paced environment.

“[Martinez] takes over the SSA when there are no supervisors and makes sure everything gets done quickly and to standard,” said Sgt. Brittney Cole, the issue section noncommissioned officer in charge at the SSA. “A lot of times, when we have someone new to this job, it takes a while to adjust and learn, but with Pvt. Martinez, she hit the ground running.”

A native of Bakersfield, California, she joined the Army in 2017 after graduating high school.

Martinez made the decision to enlist in the Army after a close friend told her to talk to a recruiter about her career goals, the recruiter went over the daily duties of an automated logistical specialists and she was hooked.

She said she could 'see herself doing this job and actually enjoying it.'

After enlisting, Martinez embarked on a new quest in life and made the 1,700 mile journey to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for basic training to become a Soldier, she later continued to advanced individual training in Fort Lee, Virginia, to learn her craft.

“I think this job fits me really well. I’m an active person and I like to be hands-on, getting things done,” said Martinez. “I also like the work environment and how willing everyone is to learn more about what they do.”

Martinez has served in the Army for a year and a half and is currently on her first deployment overseas.

She deployed to Poland mid-August in support of Atlantic Resolve.

“In the Army, as an automated logistical specialist, you have to have a passion for it,” said Cole. “And Pvt. Martinez shows she does.”

In this position, as an automated logistical specialist, Martinez has a wide array of duties. The responsibilities include paperwork, maintaining stock records, inventory records, material control, accounting, and supply reports.

“Her work and dedication show in her day-to-day routine and her leadership style,” said Sainthilaire. “So much so, you wouldn’t be able to tell that she only has a year and a half experience in this job.”

At the beginning of the deployment, the unit hit the ground running, automatically taking over the SSA and starting their own routine. Every unit works differently based on their capabilities, and the 526th QCSC is no different. When the unit arrived in theater, they wanted to change the previous plan to match their unit's capabilities and make it more efficient, productive, and time-saving.

“When we started looking for new ideas, Martinez created and produced a spreadsheet that covered how we would effectively deliver to each warehouse in a timely manner,” said Sainthilaire. “The plan was looked over and it is now the current plan we’re using for the long run. We’ve been here four months now and there haven’t been any issues so far.”

The SSA is a warehouse function for different supply items that are received, packaged, and shipped to the units to across Europe in order for them to complete their missions.

“Everything starts and ends at the SSA,” said Sainthilaire. “There’s always work to be done; It never stops. I’m just glad we have dedicated Soldiers to make it run smoothly. Everything that has been done so far in the issue section has been a direct result of Martinez’s hard work, attention to detail, and her passion for greatness.”
