DENVER, Colorado (NNS) – Navy Counselor 1st Class Michael McCarthy grew up in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, and often questioned, how can I be more than I am? How can I make a difference in the world?
Currently assigned to Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Rocky Mountain, McCarthy discovered the answers to these questions by becoming a Navy recruiter.
Following high school graduation in 2001, McCarthy entered college without having a plan. He wanted more, but didn’t know where to go from there. This changed when he met his Recruiter, Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Angel Rodriguez, whose personal scrapbook showcasing his Navy travels captured the imagination of McCarthy. McCarthy later joined the Navy in 2003 as an Aviation Ordnanceman. His first duty station was aboard the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) where he saw the world and gained maturity that allowed him to focus more precisely on his long-term goals.
McCarthy left active duty in 2007 to complete his Bachelor of Business Administration degree at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, San German campus. However, his lack of association with the Navy weighed on his mind. He joined the Navy Reserve in 2010 and was assigned to the Navy Operational Support Center Puerto Rico and Naval Forces Southern Command, U.S. Fourth Fleet. Exciting as these assignments were, he wanted yet additional “hands-on” experience and applied for a Canvasser Recruiter Reservist on Active Duty (CANREC) and later accepted orders to Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Jacksonville. Here he was assigned to the Navy Recruiting Station in Kissimmee, Florida, where his fluency in Spanish was invaluable in promoting Navy to largely Hispanic community.
“Navy Recruiting taught me to be more outgoing and how to process rejection,” said McCarthy. “That may sound a bit harsh to say, but I was so impressed with what the Navy had allowed me to accomplish, that my enthusiasm sustained me day in and out. The Navy paid for my college education, medical care for my wife and son, and allowed me to purchase three homes over the past 15 years.”
His superior performance allowed him to continue his Navy career as a recruiter with a rate conversion to active duty Navy Counselor. Under the reorganization of the command from a NRD to a NTAG, McCarthy chose to specialize in the applicant sourcing arena.
“It is essential that we [Recruiters] set the standard for Sailors at the start of their Navy careers. They are the future of our Navy. Impressing upon them our high ethical standard starts with their contact with Navy Recruiters,” said McCarthy. “I love to see our Recruits lives change as they grow. Social media is a great conduit for keeping in touch and seeing that change.”
McCarthy continued, “Navy Recruiting has been good to me. Nothing is given without earning it, and that’s the challenge that drives me for greater success, personal growth and to be the best husband and father to my family. I’m proud to be part of a winning team.”
NTAG Rocky Mountain, based in Denver, recruits the best and brightest for the six state area surrounding Colorado.
The Navy Recruiting Command consists of a command headquarters, two Recruiting Regions, 20 Navy Recruiting Districts and six Navy Talent Acquisition Groups. The Navy recruiting force totals over 6,100 personnel in more than 1,200 offices around the world. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
