Sailors from the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) participated in the beautification of Presidio Park with the San Diego Parks and Recreation Department, December 4.
For over three hours Sailors filled dumpsters, trimmed trees and shrubbery, picked up trash, and gave the park a makeover. The San Diego Parks and Recreation Department wants to attract families for recreational events and give the local community an opportunity to have a clean and safe environment.
Sailors concentrated on a single park and brought it back to peak condition.
“It’s so nice to see Sailors get off the ship and connect with our community,” said Kathy Costello, area manager for the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department. “When our parks are beautiful, everyone feels more welcome to use them.”
Chief Religious Program Specialist Demario Davis helped to coordinate the event and felt it was important for the ship’s Sailors to give back.
“We are here to make a positive impact in the community, and make it a better place for us all to live in,” said Davis. “The parks department needed help with this particular park and what better way for us to give back. Cultivating relationships through hard work and cooperation keeps our ties with the community strong.”
Working side-by-side with parks department technicians, Sailors create a sense of fellowship and comradery.
“Getting out here today to help keep San Diego looking beautiful makes me feel great,” said Information Technology Technician 2nd Class Ernestian Nunez. “I’m proud to live here, and it’s an honor to serve the community in any way I can.”
