NAVAL BASE SAN DIEGO (Dec. 4, 2018) - Vice Adm. Rich Brown, Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CNSP), visited guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52), Dec. 4.

During the visit, Brown toured Bunker Hill, which returned from a successful deployment earlier this year. In addition, Brown met with Capt. Kurt Sellerberg, Bunker Hill's commanding officer (CO) and spoke with crewmembers, government employees and civilian contractors who are performing repairs and upgrades on the ship.

"This crew has performed admirably over the past year," said Sellerberg. "From deployment to modernization, our Sailors are committed to warfighting excellence. I'm proud of the crew and glad Vice Adm. Brown was able to see the dedication the Sailors have to performing at the highest levels."

As part of the visit, Brown discussed the recently revised Surface Force Training and Readiness Manual (SFTRM). Signed on Nov. 1, the SFTRM, among other things, changes the delivery strategy of Basic Phase Training and allows ships that demonstrate proficiency during Certification Events (CEs) to certify early. Bunker Hill will be the first ship to go through the revised basic phase.

"Under the revised SFTRM, ship COs who build a culture of excellence within their crews and certify earlier will get the remaining time of the Basic Phase as their own to turn their training into lethality and further build upon their warfighting ethos," said Brown.

Before departing, Brown reminded Bunker Hill's crew of their purpose as part of the Navy.

"Your purpose is to take your ship forward, and if necessary, fight, win and come home. You can do that by following our guiding principles of good stewardship, professional development, and safety, and we'll own the fight," said Brown.
