"This is our Super Bowl" -- that's how the NWJRCF cooks view their preparation for the Thanksgiving service. At DFACs across the military, Thanksgiving is a special occasion, but at the NWJRCF it takes on added meaning because it's the one time all year that families of prisoners can visit and have a meal with them.

The NWJRCF's mission is the care, custody, and control of military prisoners. The NWJRCF provides the prisoners with educational and vocational opportunities, and rehabilitative treatment programs so that they may be returned to society as productive citizens.

"Part of caring includes treating them with dignity and respect, which includes ensuring continued relationships with their support system," said Capt. Haleigh Kirchenheiter, NWJRCF Director of Operations. "Allowing families to visit them in the facility and spend Thanksgiving with their loved one helps foster these relationships."

The Thanksgiving service is also a crucial event for the Food Service Soldiers assigned to 508th Military Police Detention Battalion, who will take the skills honed during the holiday preparation with them in their Army career and at subsequent units they will serve in.
