NASHVILLE, Tenn. (NOV. 14, 2018) – Cade Barnes, maintenance worker at the Dale Hollow Dam Power House in Celina, Tenn., is the Nashville District Employee of the Month for September 2018.
Barnes is being recognized for his significant contributions to the Dale Hollow team for going above and beyond his required duties as a maintenance worker. Barnes, described by his co-workers as a self-starter, recognized the need for identification tags on all of the newly installed equipment, piping and valves, and completed the task without supervision or instruction.
“Guys like Cade are hard to find," said Stanley Carter, Dale Hollow Power House superintendent. "He is totally dedicated to the Corps mission and continues to prove that he is an invaluable asset to our maintenance team and we appreciate all he does."
According to Carter, he considers Barnes a leader and well-seasoned maintenance worker who gains experience every time he performs a job, and possesses an incredible amount of knowledge about the Power House, maintenance and procedures that need attention daily.
“Cade is one of those guys who is a quiet professional that gets the job done, who is always patient and willing to go the extra mile to help anyone do better," said Carter.
Carter and the team at Dale Hollow are proud of Barnes because he comes in each day with a great attitude and will go above and beyond his normal duties to make a positive impact on others.
He performs a wide range of duties which includes maintaining, repairing and overhauling various mechanical and electrical features of a dam, hydroelectric plant, generating units, and switchyard including annual inspections.
According to Carter, Barnes organized equipment with 248 name plates that saved time as well as increased safety for other employees. Barnes took the initiative himself to label equipment that identified key points to avoid confusion during Lockout, tag-out procedures, ultimately making it safe for his co-workers and anyone visiting the power house.
“He is the type of guy that is a family man, quiet, humble and will go out of his way to help anyone," said Amanda Matheny, office assistant at Dale Hollow.
Steven Crawford, an electrician and co-worker, likes working with Barnes because he impressed with his expertise, tireless work ethic, and willingness to share his knowledge on how to do various maintenance jobs.
“He is most deserving for this award because of the extra effort he puts forth to his job around here and we are happy he received the award," said Crawford.
Carter said Barnes' patience and willingness to be of assistance to anyone at any time shows his dedication to his craft, to the Dale Hollow team and the personnel at the Nashville District.
Barnes said he was surprised by the recognition and feels great to know his co-workers noticed his work and appreciate his contributions to the team.
“I love working here and I like learning, and growing," said Barnes. He said one of the best things about working for the Corps is being able to work with great people and learn to adapt to various situations, serve the public, and meet great people that visit the lake.
Lt. Col. Cullen Jones, Nashville District commander, recognized Barnes at the power house and said his professionalism, attention to detail and knowledge make him a model for others to emulate around the district.
Barnes, a native of nearby Burkesville, Tenn., began working with the Corps in April 2016 and said he would not want to work anywhere else.
He said his wife Hailey and 7-month-old daughter Avery keep him grounded and energized.
“He is a good husband and father," said Hailey Barnes. He always makes family a priority and I know he loves his job and being around these guys at the power house."
Barnes hobbies include boating and camping on Dale Hollow Lake, outdoor activities and relaxing with family and friends
Jones said Barnes work ethic, initiative, team player mentality makes him a valuable asset to the Dale Hollow Lake team, the Nashville District and the Corps of Engineers.
