Thanksgiving is a time families gather and reflect on the things they are thankful for.

But for some families, this season of reflection may come with dangers.

According to the National Fire Prevention Association, Thanksgiving is the highest reported day for home cooking fires with more than 1,700 fires since 2015.

These fires are primarily caused by unattended cooking which contributed to loss of life and property.

To ensure these events do not ruin the season of thanks, the NFPA has provided these tips and tricks to prevent kitchen fires:

    – Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on a stovetop.

    – Keep children away from stoves at a minimum of three feet.

    – Stay in your home when cooking your turkey and check in on it frequently.

    – Keep matches and utility lighter away from children.

    – Never leave children alone in room with candles.

    – Ensure your smoke alarms are working.

    – Keep floors clean and free of clutter to avoid tripping hazards.
