Japanese students share technology with Misawa students

MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- The Hachinohe National College of Technology's Robot Club and Computer Programming Club visited Edgren High School and Cummings Elementary School, Feb. 4.

Three teachers and 14 students came to Misawa Air Base to show the children the projects they created as the college's second annual visit to Misawa Air Base.

"I was able to come to this event last year, and being able to do it again was very special," said Daiki Hatakeyama, Hachinohe National College of Technology's Robot Club student. "I am very glad to show the children the technology we use and the complicated robots we created."

Some of the devices the robot club brought included two different kinds of robots, a virtual reality game, musical instruments and a motion-sensored video game. Students from the high school, as well as the elementary school, were impressed with what the club presented, according to Chris O'Mara, a Japanese teacher at Edgren High School.

"The gadgets that the clubs brought were amazing," said O'Mara. "We are very thankful that they took the time to come out and put on a great presentation for the students."

This event marks the second time the college has visited Misawa Air Base to present their class projects to the Misawa Air Base students, which students hope will continue next year, according to Hatakeyama.

In addition to the success of this event, Hachinohe National College of Technology and Misawa Air Base schools are working toward becoming sister schools, which will promote future collaborative events.

"I feel very humbled to be a part of this great friendship between our schools, and the fact that this is all for the children makes this even more inspiring," said Hatakeyama. "We are very appreciative."
