The 82nd Airborne Division's Judge Advocates General Corp held their first JAG Olympics on Oct. 29, 2018, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
A six to nine-person team from each of the division’s brigades competed in various events for comradery and to test their individual capabilities and team performances based off the new standards being set in place for the new Army Combat Fitness Test.
"The idea was to get a good competition, get everyone together, and have some fun," said U.S. Army Capt. Robert Clopton, the 82nd Airborne Division administrative law attorney and one of the coordinators of the Olympics. "A lot of the time we don't see each other, everyone is pretty spread out."
"By getting everyone together, they got to perform some of the new movement standards that they will have to do in a year and a half for the new physical fitness test," he added.
The events of the Olympics consisted of activities to include: Rope climbs, pull-ups, hand-release push-ups, military bench press and ended with a relay race full of additional exercises and tasks to complete.
"It was extremely challenging," said U.S. Army Pfc. Kadeem Williams, a 1st Brigade Combat Team paralegal and competitor in the Olympics. "But I feel as a team, we are very strong, we rely on each other and understand each other's weaknesses, and in the end, it all came together.”
Actively viewing the event was Ready and Resilient or R2 Performance Expert, Adrianna Napoletano. As the competition commenced, she provided advice to the paratroopers in energy conservation and elevations in their performance.
"There is so much about performance that is mental," she said. "And there is so much room for growth and development."
R2 performance training gives soldiers the tools needed to strengthen their mental and emotional capabilities during stressful or physically challenging situations.
The 1st Brigade Combat Team came out of the competition as the victors, while the 2nd Brigade Combat Team took second place.
After the success of the Olympics, there are already plans for the spring Olympics next year, with intentions of inviting other JAG personnel throughout the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg.
