Halloween is a time for all Team Shaw ghouls and goblins to patrol nearby neighborhoods and cities in search of candy and goodies.

Before venturing out into the night to trick-or-treat, service members and their families should follow these safety tips provided by the National Safety Council.

Safety is divided into three sections: costume, trick-or-treating, and motorist safety.

Costume safety helps parents be aware of the dangers of some costumes and cosmetics during Halloween. Some tips to consider are:

    – All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire resistant.

    – Avoid masks that may obstruct vision.

    – Apply reflective tape to costumes or bags.

    – When purchasing makeup, ensure it is non-toxic.

    – Remove all makeup before children go to bed.

While children are out and about, it is important to give them insight on the dangers of traveling at night. Some tips and safe practices include:

    – A responsible adult should accompany children on neighborhood rounds.

    – Plan and review a safe route.

    – Agree on a specific time children should return home.

    – Children should never enter a stranger’s car or home.

    – Children should travel only in familiar, well-lit areas.

Additionally, the NSC offers tips for families traveling by vehicle on the holiday.

    – Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs.

    – Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.

    – Watch for children in dark clothing.

    – Discourage new or inexperienced drivers from operating a motor vehicle.

According to the NSC website, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year.

As the holiday approaches, and children eagerly await to aquire their stockpile of candy, remember to implement these safe Halloween practices into your routine.
