An Army logistics officer assigned to the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support was promoted to colonel during a ceremony in Philadelphia Oct. 25
Col. Abel Young is the director of DLA Troop Support’s Subsistence supply chain.
“Today is a great day for the Army, DLA and the Young family, celebrating your promotion to colonel,” said Brig. Gen. Mark Simerly, DLA Troop Support commander, who officiated the ceremony.
Simerly said that reaching a milestone like attaining the rank of colonel isn’t possible without the support of family.
“Thank you all for your unwavering support, not just today, but throughout Abel’s life and military career,” Simerly said to Young’s family in attendance.
Young’s family has strong military ties. His father served in the Army during World War II. One of his brothers is a retired Army lieutenant colonel, another brother is a retired Marine sergeant major, and another brother is a retired staff sergeant. His daughter is a cadet at the U.S Military Academy at West Point, New York.
Simerly said that Young has proven over the year that he’s led Subsistence that he deserves the promotion.
“For more than 21 years, you’ve done your part to ensure that our soldiers were properly equipped for their missions,” Simerly said. “And of course, serving at DLA Troop Support means that the impact of your service has touched every American service member on the planet. Abel, you should be proud – you have earned this promotion.”
Young, a Chicago Heights, Illinois, native, thanked those in attendance for supporting him throughout his career and expressed how he felt in the moment.
“There are three sentences that describe how I feel right now,” Young said. “I’m am full of faith. I am blessed. And I am humbled.”
Young thanked his parents, family, friends and military leaders for making him the man he is today.
“Thank you, because I know that I did not get here by myself,” Young said. “To my wife, you’re the most valuable player on the team and no doubt that you’re a general.”
