Fleeman named Nashville District Employee of the Month for July 2018

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 27, 2018) – Judi Fleeman, program analyst at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District Tennessee River Navigation Area’s East Tennessee Section at Fort Loudoun Lock in Lenoir City, Tenn., is the employee of the month for July 2018.

Fleeman is being recognized for her work managing the budget and tracking expenditures in coordination with the operations manager and assistant managers at Fort Loudoun Lock, Melton Hill Lock, Watts Bar Lock, Chickamauga Lock and Nickajack Lock.

“Judi consistently demonstrated patience, responsiveness, respect and consideration of her interactions and accomplishments while willing to make personal sacrifices, including working longer hours to get the job done,” said Maj. Justin Toole, Nashville District deputy commander. “Her professionalism, teamwork, and dedication to Tennessee River Operations and willingness to go above and beyond is of great quality to our organization.”

Toole also lauded Fleeman for promptly and appropriately coordinating funding and procurement packages for lock masters along the eastern section of the Tennessee River that were crucial to executing the budget as the end of the fiscal year approached.

Tom Hale, Tennessee River Operations manager, couldn’t say enough about Fleeman’s performance and attention to detail.

“Judi’s superior technical ability and ‘can-do’ attitude has been vital in accomplishing numerous crucial tasks for mission accomplishment. She expends extra effort in helping teammates with whatever issues they need assistance with,” Hale said. “Judi’s extensive professional and personal contributions have been vital to Tennessee Area River Operations and the lives of the employees with whom she interacts.”

Fleeman expressed some shock when she found our about her selection as employee of the month, especially given the fact that there are so many great employees in the Nashville District.

“It is a great honor as I know a lot of thought goes into both the nomination and selection process,” Fleeman said

She noted that just like it takes a village to raise a child, so it goes with her in relation to her coworkers.

“We are only as good as our coworkers who work with us. There are many times I have to call someone at the district office or another program analyst in the field to help me with a process I’m not familiar with, and they are always available to answer my questions and assist however they can,” Fleeman stressed.

Fleeman began working with the Corps of Engineers in 1996 in a temporary position as an office clerk. During that time she helped with the implementation of a new financial computer program. She eventually accepted a permanent part time position as an office assistant and held it until she accepted the clerk position again in 2000. In 2007 she moved into her present position as a program analyst.

In her off time, Fleeman said she loves to RV cross country and locally in the Smoky Mountains. She also volunteers as a dog foster parent with the non-profit organization Westie Rescue, and has helped find permanent homes for a dozen dogs.

“It is sometimes difficult to be a rescue foster parent because we get attached to the pups and emotionally vested in them, but it is so very rewarding when you can see the difference you made in each dog’s life.”

Fleeman said she very much appreciates the support of her husband Gary, who is her high school sweetheart and husband of 36 years. They have two daughters, Amber and Teela, and a grandson, Gavin, who keeps her on her toes with science fiction with superheroes, robots and Transformers.

Matt Emmons, Navigation Facilities manager for the East Tennessee Area, said Fleeman has been a tremendous resource, especially as he came into the position.

“She has provided a lot of mentoring and budget background for me. She is a very deserving employee of this recognition,” Emmons said.
