San Francisco (NNS) – Part of a recruiter’s mission is to maintain a positive bond with their community. Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Michael Washington, a recruiter assigned to Navy Recruiting District (NRD) San Francisco, found a special way to make this happen.

Washington was born and raised in Jacksonville, North Carolina, by his mother, Victoria Washington. She instilled strong values in his life and was a driving force behind her son’s decision to join the Navy.

Washington expressed that he joined the Navy because of the many opportunities and the variety of career paths offered to Sailors. He sought the freedom to develop his career the way he wanted.

“The Navy has provided an endless amount of opportunities not only for myself but for my family as well,” said Washington. “It has enabled me to be the provider that I’ve always envisioned myself to be.”

Washington went into recruiting in 2016 after his first two sea tours where he served aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and the USS George Bush (CVN 77).

“I wanted to do something that would allow me to make an impact not only in my community but for the Navy as a whole,” said Washington. “So what better way than to look for those who will be taking the watch after I am gone.”

On their own, recruiters are given the opportunity to make a strong impact on the communities they serve in, but Washington’s past pushed him to take his involvement a step further by volunteering for his community’s Special Olympics program.

“I wanted to get involved because I have a cousin that was born with down syndrome,” said Washington. “As a family we have always made sure to involve him in as many of these events as possible.”
According to the official Special Olympics association, these events have a large and positive impact on the quality of life for people with intellectual and physical disabilities, their families and their respective communities.

“I want to be more involved as far as sponsoring and bringing more awareness to these events,” said Washington. “This is a great experience. Seeing how happy and competitive these athletes is truly amazing.”

There are many short-term and long-term volunteer opportunities with the Special Olympics. With his five years of experience, Washington has made it very clear that his participation with these junctures is a long term commitment.

“I was not the best kid and teenager growing up,” said Washington. “When I joined the Navy I became a man and realized that there is more in life. I’ve since had two beautiful daughters, Maliah and Jaylani Mychelle. I strive to be better than the day before and I will stay true to that.”

Navy Recruiting District (NRD) San Francisco encompasses approximately 58,000 square miles. The district boundaries cover predominately Northern California and include areas of San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Central Coast and Central Valley. The command’s Headquarters are in Mountain View, California. The NRD is subdivided into 10 divisions which include 34 enlisted Navy Recruiting Stations (NRS), 4 Navy Reserve Recruiting Stations (NRRS), 3 Navy Officer Recruiting Stations (NORS), and 2 Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS).

The Navy’s recruiting force totals over 6,100 personnel in more than 1,000 recruiting stations around the globe. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.

NRC consists of a command headquarters, two Navy Recruiting Regions, 20 Navy Recruiting Districts and six Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 1,000 recruiting stations across the country.
