CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.-- Mark Hackel, Macomb County Executive, received the National Guard Association of the United States’ Patrick Henry Award today, delivered by two representatives of the National Guard Association of Michigan at the monthly Selfridge Base Community Council meeting in Chesterfield, Mich.

“During his tenure as the foremost community leader in what is arguably the center of defense industry and innovation in Michigan, Mark has been a stalwart advocate for the base and the National Guard,” said Brig. Gen. John D. Slocum, 127th Wing and Selfridge Air National Guard Base commander. “[His] tremendous support for the National Guard didn't just begin with the initiative to garner the F-35.”

Despite not receiving the most recent F-35 mission after a yearlong effort, Selfridge continues reaping the benefit of a close partnership with Macomb County. These benefits include safety and environmental initiatives, support for the base's centennial anniversary celebration and Air Show and the Air Force Community Partnership Program, among others.

This is incredible, there’s absolutely no question about it, Hackel said. The connectivity between the county and Selfridge has always been great, but it’s never been as good as it is now.

Hackel acknowledges his shared passion to tout Selfridge as Michigan’s “Hometown Air Force,” and the 127th Wing's dedicated staff as the genesis of the incredible relationship the county and base share. The audience, comprised of business and civic leaders from Macomb County, applauded in agreement.

"Thank you, I appreciate this [award] immensely, the work we’ve been able to accomplish has been because of this outstanding relationship,” Hackel said.

The National Guard Association of the United States is the Guard’s primary advocate in Washington, educating Congress on the roles, capabilities and requirements of the nation’s first military force. The Patrick Henry Award provides recognition to local officials and civic leaders, who in a position of great responsibility distinguished themselves with outstanding and exceptional service to the Armed Forces of the United States, the National Guard or NGAUS.
