On August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in eastern Texas. The storm stalled over the Texas coast for four days, dropping more than 60 inches of rainfall over southeastern Texas. In the aftermath of the hurricane, survivors and recovery workers faced another challenge -- the possibility of the outbreak of diseases carried by mosquitoes due to
millions of acres of standing, stagnant water. Responding to this threat, the Texas State Department of Health coordinated with FEMA to begin mosquito control in the affected areas. With resources stretched thin and the titanic scope of the task at hand, the state of Texas asked FEMA to request additional resources through the Defense Support of
Civil Authorities (DSCA) program. Air Force Reserve Command's
910th Airlift Wing, based at Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Ohio,
home of the DoD's only large area, fixed-wing aerial spray mission,
answered the call. On September 8, 2017, the 910th sent
more than 90 Reserve Citizen Airmen to Kelly Field at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas to begin aerial spray operations. All working together to launch aerial spray missions covering nearly 3 million acres of eastern Texas, an area nearly twice the size of the state of Delaware, in just under two weeks, using night vision capabilities, ...greatly reducing the pest insect population and the potential for outbreaks of mosquito-carried diseases. Citizen Airmen of the 910th Airlift Wing returned to Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Ohio upon completion of their mission to aid the citizens of the state of Texas in their time of need in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
