Annual North Carolina 8th Annual Operation Kids on Guard Kicks Off

Laura Tickle | Children of North Carolina (NC) Air National Guardsmen were given backpacks filled with military memorabilia and donated gifts following the Annual NC Operation Kids on Guard held at the NC Regional Training Site in Stanly County, Sept. 8, 2018. Children of military members were able to join in activities including short aircraft rides, engaging with military members while learning flight structure and commands, interactive displays with a C-17 Globemaster III and other aircraft, as well as a ropes course and bouncy castles.

Operation Kids on Guard is an event focused on military family dynamics and how a deployment can effect a family. The children learned the different types of jobs military members can hold with over thirty interactive and educational activities on site.

Activities for the day included a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, other airframe displays, and flights in bi-planes over the local area. Children engaged in a ropes course, a lego display provided by a local Boy Scout Troop, and various bounce houses.

After flying for the first time in a bi-plane, Gage Shelton, age 8, stated, “I loved the plane; I want to be a pilot now.”

As the day wound down, the children headed home with brand new backpacks filled with goodies, fond memories with the North Carolina Air National Guard, and a sense of what it means to serve.
