DANNELLY FIELD, Ala. (September 7, 2018) — Approximately sixty high schools across Alabama participated in Dannelly Field's STEM Day September 7, 2018, here. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math and connects academics and learning to real world concepts, contexts and careers.
“We’re raising awareness of what the 187th Fighter Wing and the Red Tail’s are all about,” said Maj. Shawn Daley, STEM Day Director. “Students are learning about aviation and how the military relates to STEM-type career fields.”
From pilots and maintainers, weapons loading and ammunitions display to a security forces K9 attack dog demonstration and more, students were able to see many sides of the military from the wing members themselves.
“I would hope that every Airman and every person that is wearing the uniform would be passionate to extend the opportunities that we have here at the Alabama Air National Guard,” Daley said. “I think making a difference today with these kids is the reason why we’re out here.”
With approximately 3000 students in attendance, their teachers and counselors can already see a difference the STEM Day program made.
“Our kids are seeing things that they would never see before,” said Ashley Moran, an Intervention Counselor from Hoover High School. “Some of them got to be on a plane, that have never been on a plane before.
The kids have really enjoyed it. They’re going to be talking about this forever, and it’s only going to grow from here.”
