NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Lt. Cmdr. Jon Wende, Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command (NCDOC) communications & information systems department head, retired from the Navy after 21 years of service during a ceremony onboard the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), Aug. 17.

An estimated 150 guests including family members, friends and shipmates, attended the ceremony to honor and bid fair winds and following seas to Wende, whose Naval career began in May 1997 and will officially come to an end October 2018.

“Jon is a pillar of integrity, a true friend, a dedicated father and husband. He is someone who served honorably for 21 years and deserves our highest respect. He epitomizes the Navy’s core values of honor, courage, and commitment” said Cmdr. Darin DeBow. “On behalf of all those you served and those who have served you, I thank you for your wise counsel, sage advice and friendship, we wish you well on your next journey in life.”

Wende, a native of Satellite Beach, Fla., began his military career at Recruit Training Command (RTC) in Great Lakes, Ill. Upon graduation, he was assigned to Truman as an Electronics Technician (ET) and became a plankowner.

Subsequent duty assignments include USS Normandy (CG 60), Naval Postgraduate School, where he earned a Master’s degree in Space Systems Operations, Amphibious Squadron Six, USS Bataan (LHD 5), USS Wasp (LHD 1), North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, Joint Forces Staff College.

The ceremony included other sentimental components such as, the color guard came from Wende’s Reserve Officer Training Corps unit at Old Dominion University, and the guest speaker was a close and long-time friend of the family, retired Chief Master Sgt., Cole E. Panning.

Wende surprised his wife, Ana, by renewing his wedding vows during the ceremony to demonstrate his renewed dedication of their marriage and civilian life together.

The ceremony concluded with a retirement flag folding and presentation with the recitation of the “The Watch” by his brother, Chief Cryptologic Technician (Collection) Tom Wende, who relieved him of his watch. Wende was then piped ashore for the last time.

NCDOC’s mission is to execute defensive cyberspace operations and enable global power projection through proactive network defense and reports operationally to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet (FCC/C10F).

Since its establishment, FCC/C10F has grown into an operational force composed of more than 16,000 Active and Reserve Sailors and civilians organized into 26 active commands, 40 Cyber Mission Force units, and 26 reserve commands around the globe. FCC serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy's Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service. C10F, the operational arm of FCC, executes its mission through a task force structure similar to other warfare commanders. In this role, C10F provides support of Navy and joint missions in cyber/networks, cryptologic/signals intelligence and space.
