SAN DIEGO (August 28, 2018) – Vice Adm. Richard Brown, Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CNSP), welcomed the newest qualified Warfare Tactics Instructors (WTI) to the fleet during
a graduation ceremony at CNSP headquarters on August 28th.

This is the sixth graduating class of Anti-Submarine and Surface Warfare (ASW/AUSW) WTIs to complete Surface and Mine Warfare Development Center’s (SMWDC) rigorous 16-week course. The graduates were selected for the course from a highly-competitive pool of the surface community’s top talent.

“You are an elite group of warriors,” said Brown during the graduation ceremony. “Including this group, there are only 80 graduates of the Anti-Submarine and Anti-Surface Warfare WTI course. Only 46 have completed readiness production tours and have returned to the Fleet. You are proven fleet performers. Now that you wear the WTI patch, the fleet will recognize you as tactical experts.”

WTIs generally complete readiness production tours after initial qualification to continue to develop personal and Fleet lethality and tactical proficiency. WTIs provide a high short-term return on investment for the Surface Fleet through their readiness production tours in key training billets and represent a long term investment to national security in support of the National Defense Strategy.

“WTIs are highly prized, high demand assets. A couple of DESRONs have deployed with ASW WTIs on board, and the Commodores were very impressed. This program is having an impact,” said Brown.

With recent changes to the Surface Warfare Officer career path, a high-performing junior officer may be nominated to attend SMWDC’s WTI program after completing their initial 30-month sea tour as part of the “Accelerated Warfighter” program. Following graduation, the Officer will return to their ship and then be assigned as a WTI in one of the SMWDC HQ Divisions or key training billets throughout the Surface Fleet to complete readiness production tours during one of the Post-Division Officer tours. During this tour, they will support SMWDC’s lines of operation and drive Fleet lethality and tactical proficiency.

Established in 2015, SMWDC is a subordinate command of Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet and exists to increase the lethality and tactical proficiency of the Surface Force. SMWDC headquarters is at Naval Base San Diego with four divisions in Virginia and California focused on Sea Combat, IAMD, Amphibious Warfare, and Mine Warfare.
