Motocross trails, archery courses and waterfront lodges are spread throughout the encampment. A large lake and playing fields are filled with people enjoying the warm weather. Located in the secluded wilderness adjacent to the illustrious viking-themed town of Poulsbo is Island Lake Camp, the site of a Chaplains Religious Enrichment Development Operation retreat. Sailors from all commands throughout Navy Region Northwest, gathered to take part in a personal resiliency workshop.

Nearly 30 Sailors, assigned to both Naval Base Kitsap and USS Nimitz (CVN 68) participated in the day-long event which included numerous paintball matches, a high-ropes course and several team-building events designed to make Sailors work together and solve collective solutions in high-stress situations.

Cmdr. William Holiman, CREDO Region Northwest director, from Little Rock, Arkansas, said these events help Sailors build mental strength and spiritual fortitude through adversity.

“Our goal is to stretch people out of their comfort zones in a safe environment so when they face genuine adversity they will be able to use the proper coping mechanisms to get through any issues they may come across.”

Throughout the events, Sailors developed confidence and comfort in stressful situations and learned to rely on one another to complete the exercises.

“Whether it’s through friendships, relationships, moral, or spiritual strength, knowing how to find the resources to deal with adversity is very important. CREDO wants to be part of the Navy’s desire for tough, resilient Sailors,” said Holiman.

The scheduled events of the workshop were successful in bringing Sailors closer together and building comradery.

“It was a great equalizer. We were put into situations where age, rank, and gender didn’t matter because we all had to equally trust each other to have the best possible outcome,” said Operations Specialist 3rd Class Amber Marbury, a Nimitz Sailor from Killeen, Texas.

Personal resiliency workshops are just one of the many events sponsored by CREDO to enhance the well-being of Sailors. Marriage enrichment workshops, family retreats, and team building programs are also part of the CREDO agenda to help Sailors lives become more well-rounded and improved.

CREDO Northwest works with active duty service members to strengthen the spiritual well-being and improve the lives of service members and families. They offer workshops, seminars and retreats throughout the year in order to accomplish this goal.
