Employees from the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support strengthened their partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency Region II team during a visit Aug 7.
The visit to the regional office in Manhattan, New York allowed the two agencies to learn about each other’s missions, capabilities and responsibilities for future operations planning and management.
“Region II is hoping to familiarize itself with the myriad of DLA resourcing capabilities,” Jason Wind, FEMA Region II Acting Response division director, said. “Gaining knowledge from this visit will allow Region II to incorporate DLA into its plans and source strategies.”
Each of DLA Troop Support’s five supply chains were represented at the meeting.
Troy Vokes, Construction and Equipment Plans and Integration Office chief, helped coordinate the visit and said it opened dialogue on improving support to FEMA during a disaster.
“Defense support to civil authorities support is a very dynamic endeavor,” Vokes said. “Working side by side with our FEMA partners helps both parties ensure a quick and more thorough response, which helps save lives and mitigate property damage.”
The FEMA Region II office serves New York, New Jersey, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
According to a DLA article on preparing for the 2018 hurricane season, DLA Troop Support supported FEMA and U.S. Northern Command hurricane relief operations with approximately 88.1 million meals, 738 lines of pharmaceuticals, 1,264 generators and hundreds of thousands of gallons of water in 2017.
Wind says the regional offices do not often get involved with DLA directly, but he expects a mutually beneficial relationship moving forward.
“This partnership will allow FEMA Region II to add additional ‘tools’ to its toolbox to support jurisdictions during disaster response,” Wind said. “It also may create opportunities for DLA to send representatives to the Regional Response Coordination Center or downrange with the Incident Management Assistance Team to assist with the leveraging of these resourcing capabilities.”
