The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is scheduled to host a Hiring Our Heroes Transition Summit at the 20th Force Support Squadron main fitness center at 9 a.m., Sept. 18.

The goal of the event is to get service members and spouses face time with employers who are seeking to hire, said Michele Vogel, Transition Summits senior manager. This facilitates the transition from military to civilian life.

The full-day event will consist of information panels, workshops, mock interviews, resume reviews and a hiring fair connecting attendees with companies dedicated to hiring military veterans and spouses.

The summit really benefits the entire community, said Vogel. It helps companies find prospective employees with desired skillsets, prepares service members for transition while introducing them to industry representatives, and connects military spouses with businesses that understand portable careers.
Military members and their families may have career histories that differ from traditional job seekers and may benefit more from a program tailored to these unique paths.

“(They) bring with them military discipline and values that are needed in the civilian workforce,” said Erica Brown, 20th FSS community readiness technician. “Our job seekers come from diverse backgrounds and have the ability to adapt to changing environments wherever they are needed.”

To benefit, attendees are encouraged to participate to the fullest possible extent.

Ideally, attendees would make a day of the event and arrive dressed to impress with resumes in hand as business representatives may hire on the spot, said Vogel. However, not everyone is in the same phase of their transition to civilian life, so military uniforms of the day are acceptable and individuals are encouraged to participate however they can.
