USS Nimitz Adopts New Hair Standards

    BREMERTON, WA, UNITED STATES

    USS Nimitz (CVN 68)

A new regulation, NAVADMIN 163/18, released July 11, made a number of changes to uniform policy. These changes included giving commanding officers the option to authorize female Sailors ponytails. Capt. Kevin P. Lenox, commanding officer, USS Nimitz (CVN 68), announced Nimitz would adopt the new regulation during an all hands call aboard the ship, July 25.

“I was surprised when the captain announced that we were adopting the new hairstyle, but I’m super happy about it.” said Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 3rd Class Taylor Hendricks, from Hogansville, Georgia.

To the Sailors adopting the new hairstyles, the decision is based on more than aesthetics.

“I think it’s a good idea for a multitude of reasons,” said Hendricks. “The bun is extremely uncomfortable, and a lot of guys don’t understand that it actually gives you migraines if you wear your hair up for long periods of time. Another good thing about the change is the ponytail is easier to wear in your hardhat and cover compared to the bun.”

The new policy also allows females an easier way to maintain a professional appearance.

“I think it gives females the opportunity to grow out their hair, and it keep us from either having sloppy buns or our hair being out of regulation from touching our collars,” said Religious Program Specialist 3rd Class Joann Jones, from Taberg, New York.

Even though the changes only apply to females, it benefits everyone to know the standard.

“I feel like people should educate themselves on the new standards since they’ll be seeing people walking around with the new hairstyle,” said Hendricks. “It’s good to know what is allowed and what isn’t.”
