Col. Kenneth N. Reed assumed command from Col. Calvin C. Hudson II Friday in a ceremony officiated by Brig. Gen. Paul E. Owen, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Southwestern Division.
The formal change of command ceremony took place at 2 p.m. at the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas.
“We have accomplished so much over the past 36 months, however, I could not have do it alone. I continue to have great admiration and am truly grateful for the work being done throughout the District. Team Fort Worth has a very complex and versatile mission, and we play a vital role in bringing value to our Nation,” said Col. Hudson.
Reed will manage one of the Corps’ largest military construction programs, which encompasses all design and construction on Army and Air Force installations in Texas and parts of Louisiana and New Mexico. He will also supervise the operation and maintenance of the district’s 25 lakes, which furnish approximately 30 percent of the state’s water supply and provide outdoor recreation opportunities for millions of visitors annually.
“I am truly humbled and thankful for the opportunity to command a District that has consistently brought value to the Nation. I recognize this blessing and excited to take command of such a distinguished organization,” said Col. Reed.
A native of Louisville, Alabama, Col. Reed received his commission in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after graduating as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the University of Alabama in 1995. He has attended Senior Service College at the National Defense University’s Joint Advance Warfighting School and is a graduate of Command and General Staff College, as well as the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Course. He has held a variety of leadership and staff positions throughout his career which include Sapper and Support Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, Battalion Maintenance Officer, Executive and Operations Officer and Commander. He served as the Aide-de-Camp for the Commanding General of the United States Army Corps of Engineers and Chief of Engineers in Washington, DC and most recently, as the Future Operations Branch Chief for U.S. European Command in Stuttgart Germany.
The Change of Command is a time-honored military tradition which formally reaffirms the authority of command. It is a transfer of the total responsibility, authority and accountability from one individual to another. The transfer is symbolized by the passing of the organizational flag, an icon which embodies the history of the unit or organization.
