    Sept. 2, Venice. This regatta, famous for its spectacular historical water parade that precedes the race, is the most important event in the annual Venetian rowing calendar. It dates back centuries, probably as far back as the mid 13th century when Venice needed to train the crews of its Navy in the art of rowing.     Historical Reenactment
    Aug. 14, Massa Marittima (Grosseto), Piazza del Duomo. This festival was first held in the early years of the 14th century: 24 competitors, armed with replicas of 14th century Italian crossbows, used by their ancestors, com¬pete trying to center a target placed 30 meters away. On the back of the target is a painting of the festival’s name¬sake, the girifalco (gyrfalcon), its wings spread wide in flight. The competitor whose arrow hits the center of the target wins.

    Horse Race
    Aug. 16: 4:45 p.m., Carabinieri parade; 4:50 p.m. historic pageant; 7 p.m. the race begins. The Palio of Siena is one of the most famous horse races in the world. During the annual spectacle the city is divided into 17 competing districts (Contrade). In the months leading up to the event, 10 districts are se¬lected for each race and each is assigned a horse, which will compete in the Piazza del Campo. The festivities start three days prior with parades, food booths, blessing of the horses, live music and four race trials.

    Bravio delle Botti
    Barrels Competition and Festival
    Aug. 17-24, Montepulciano (Siena). This event dates back to the 14th century when races were run on horse¬back. Only in more recent times has it been transformed in a competition with barrels (botti). Since Montepulciano is famous
    worldwide for its red wine Nobile di Montepul¬ciano, the idea came about of using wine barrels for the eight districts to compete against each other to win the bravio, a painted banner depicting the city’s patron saint, Saint John.

    Aug. 18, 9:20-11:45 p.m., historical parade of the city districts; official grand opening of the barrels competition
    Aug. 19, 3:30-7 p.m., historical parade of the flag-wavers and drummers; presentation of the cloth; award ceremo¬ny of the food and wine competition entitled “At the Table with the Nobles” in Piazza Grande.
    Aug. 19-24, 9-11 p.m. barrel-pushing practice for Sun¬day’s competition
    Aug. 23, 9 -11:45 p.m., historical costume parade with knights and noblemen along the streets lit only by flashlights and torches, accompanied by flag-wavers and drummers
    Aug. 24: 10 a.m.-8 p.m., the race takes place with contestants pushing heavy wooden wine barrels for about a kilometer uphill along the narrow streets of the town’s historical center. Each barrel is pushed by two strong spingitori (pushers) up to the finish line in Piazza Grande. Along the way, many other residents and fans run alongside each team to en¬courage them to keep going. Winners receive the bravio at the end of the race in Piazza Grande.

    Giostra del Saracino
    Saracen Joust
    Sept. 3, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; Arezzo, Piazza Grande; this is one of the most important Tuscan festivals; it is held twice every year, in June and September; the whole city turns up in medieval costumes to recreate the atmosphere of medieval Arezzo as the city’s districts compete against each other in a joust to win the Golden Lance; the event has its origins in the Middle Ages, when knights used to simulate a battle by using their lance on a puppet of the bad guy; at the time of the Crusades, the bad guy was a Saracen; in medieval society, jousts and tournaments were the means to celebrate special events; the tradition as appeared and disappeared throughout the centuries, but it has been occurring twice annually since 1931 (except for the years of WWII); 3 p.m. historical parade; flag-throwers show; competition of the four city districts, each one represented by two knights; each one gallops on horseback with a wooden lance and aims at the Buratto, which is an armor-plated dummy holding a shield that is divided into sectors corresponding to points; each knight has two runs along the lizza (jousting track); the competition is won by the district whose knights obtain the most points.
