Fleet and Family Support Center offered a Million Dollar Sailor class, open to active duty service members and dependents, July 19-20, 2018.

Million Dollar Sailor is designed to educate Sailors about financial planning and covers topics like saving, investing and insurance.

“The class is geared toward junior Sailors and gives them a crash course in saving, investing, credit management, and house and car buying,” said Lauren Sims, a personal financial manager at Fleet and Family Support Center. “We are here to provide support and counsel to anyone that needs it. Our goal is to keep Sailors mission ready, so they don’t have to worry about finances.”

Though the class is formatted with junior Sailors in mind, there is something for everyone to learn and take away.

“Classes like Million Dollar Sailor provide a lot of great information, and I feel like it is always good to keep learning,” said Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd Class Rodolfo Felicianorivera, from Puerto Rico. “The biggest lesson that I am taking away from this class is to do more financial planning. I need to look at where I can cut costs and put more into savings and investing. My financial choices are important, because I am preparing for my future and setting an example for
    my kids.”

Felicianorivera said Million Dollar Sailor was even helpful for someone like him who has a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He said the instructors stressed contributing to the Thrift Savings Plan which was something he did not do when he first joined the Navy.

“It was good for me to go back to the basics and make sure that I am heading in a good direction, in regards to finances,” said Felicianorivera.

Personal financial managers help the class understand why it is important track their money and evaluate how to spend it.

“We start off by figuring out Sailors money habits,” said Sims. “They need to find out if they are spontaneous or if they are more about security or status. This helps Sailors to know themselves better and where they can improve. We look at personal financial management and steps they can take to become a millionaire.”

Fleet and Family Support Center regularly offers classes like Million Dollar Sailor and the Command Financial Specialist Course, but personal financial managers are also available for counseling with finances on a personal basis.

“The role of a personal financial manager is to educate and provide training for Sailors and their families,” said Sims. “A lot of our work takes place in one on one settings where we can provide personalized feedback and counseling for Sailors.”

Sims said some Sailors get referred to Fleet and Family Support Center by their command if they need help to get out of a bad financial situation. Managing finances is important for everyone, but it is critical for people in the military because their security clearances are on the line.

“Most people who come to us are not referrals though, and they are trying to better themselves and improve their finances,” said Sims.

Fleet and Family Support Center on Naval Base Kitsap offers classes designed to improve the financial well-being of Sailors assigned to commands across Navy Region Northwest.
